What to Wear Instead of Yoga Pants: 30 Days to Gorgeous Mom Style

I like to think I have turned lounging into something of an art form. I’ve had to. After all, I spend most of my days working from home. Sure, I run out for lunches and volunteering and meetings before picking up the girls for the flurry of afternoon activities, but for a good chunk of the day, it’s me and my laptop, so comfiness is a priority. When the girls were babies, this meant every variation on the track suit imaginable.

Yes, I said that out loud. Right here on a site about mom fashion.

I even owned a zip front jumpsuit in purple velour with, ahem, silver. For 10 minutes, I really liked it. Fortunately, that brief and unfortunate chapter in my fashion history has passed. And, since this was pre-Facebook, I don’t have to be reminded of my fuzzy brained wardrobe choices, but sometimes, they still haunt me.

You live and learn, and I have since discovered that loungewear can look as cute as it feels. Last weekend, I had a client then a birthday party, and I wore a pair of stretchy, super-comfortable black ponte knit pants from Joe’s Jeans with a Gianni Bini silk front tee and a black sparkle trimmed cardigan from Antonio Melani. I could have slept in that outfit, but it looked pulled together enough for a nice meeting, especially when I slipped on a pair of heels later.

Of course there are designers specializing in the softest, comfiest knits imaginable. My favorites include James Perse, Splendid, Three Dots, Michael Stars and Ella Moss. More affordable options are everywhere, from Target to Loft to Old Navy. Slim jogger pants and pretty jeweled sweatshirts are super trendy right now, and you can find them at every price point. (Athleisure, as it’s being called, is such a huge trend that some fashion forecasters have predicted the death of denim). The best part about this trend? The pieces are as versatile as they are comfortable. Mix and match these comfy bottoms with a chambray or flannel shirt, moto jacket, or even a silky top, and pair the tops with jeans, colored skinnies or skirts. Here, 5 chic comfortable outfits you can wear every day.

All of these pieces

1. Comfy Outfit Formula #1: Ponte Knit Pants + Cool Tee + Pretty Cardigan

Black ponte knit pants are just about the comfiest and most versatile thing you can wear, and provide the perfect foundation for a million looks.

Paige Verdugo ponte pants, J. Crew cashmere cardigan, Collective Habit tee, ModCloth flats and BCBG necklace.

Comfy Outfit Formula #2: Slim Joggers + Striped Tee + Military Jacket

These slim joggers are sleek enough to wear with heels and a silky top, and comfortable enough to roll around on the floor with the kids. Pair them with casual flats, a pretty striped top and a military jacket for structure and color.

Victoria’s Secret joggers, Aeropostale jacket, Red Haute lace tee, Tom’s slipons and BlingJewelry.com necklace.

Comfy Outfit Formula #3: Fancy Sweatshirt + Twill Joggers + Colorful Flats

A sweatshirt that’s jeweled, embellished or otherwise out of the ordinary is unexpected and fun, and these twill joggers are a dressier alternative that could work at the office or at church. Punctuate the look with colorful flats or, for evening, strappy heelsand a great bold cuff.

Max Studio jogger, MANGO sweatshirt, Report Signature flats and Fevrie.com cuffs.

Comfy Outfit Formula #4: Drapey Tunic + Leggings + Motorcycle Boots

The details make a super simple look like this come together – a pretty colored tunic, leather trimmed leggings (or full faux leather leggings – my fave), and chunky boots with gold detail. An edgy necklace completes the look.

Victoria’s Secret tunic, Abercrombie leggings, Target boots and House of Harlow necklace.

Comfy Outfit Formula #5: Sweatshirt Dress + Denim Jacket + Trainers

A sweatshirt dress is every bit as comfortable as pants, and more feminine too. Plus, no worry about layering. Dress it down with sleek trainers and a denim jacket. I would wear a dress like this every day if no one would notice. 😉

LOFT Lou & Grey sweatshirt dress, H&M jacket, Adidas shoes and Bar III necklace.

These cute outfits offer oodles of options that are pleasingly yoga-pant free. Still not ready to embrace the athleisure trend? Simply replace your current sweatpants or yoga pants with a pair of slim joggers for an instant update.
