Pick the Perfect Watch: 30 Days to Gorgeous Mom Style

Recently, I discovered a slew of disturbing images on the internet, all revealing a subculture that I never knew existed. Image after image of Men’s Watch Selfies. Seriously. Men are taking picture after picture of their wrists, sporting favorite watches, and posting it on the internet for other men to admire. Sad and senseless, but who can blame them. A watch is the only adornment most men ever wear, apart from a plain wedding band. They have to have something to get excited about.

To a woman, a watch is another piece of jewelry, something to round out her stack of bracelets or draw further attention to her ring finger. It is not usually the subject of obsession and it’s definitely not for telling time. That’s why most women find one watch they like and forget about it, wearing it day in and day out, without considering how it affects their overall look. That would be like owning only one bag. (I know. The horror.)

So how many watches do you need. You know I don’t believe in limitations. I do, however, believe in minimums. A basic watch wardrobe for women should consist of these 4 styles. (How many you own of each style is entirely up to you!)

1. The Jewelry Watch

During a Christmas visit to my family after about a year of dating, Kevin bought me a vintage platinum and diamond Hamilton watch at a small downtown jewelry store. When I showed it to my mom, she said: “He’s going to propose.” And she was right. The platinum and diamond watch was the precursor to another platinum and diamond purchase a couple of months later. Like most vintage watches, it’s small and delicate and dressy. And those are pretty much the characteristics you are looking for in a jewelry watch. It is, essentially, a pretty bracelet with a timepiece attached. Here, three beautiful jewelry watches for three different

The Everyday Watch

Yes, I know it seems like I am contradicting myself, but I am not. Not really. Sure, the everyday style is versatile, but it doesn’t take the place of the other two styles. It does, however, work with jeans or a dress or a suit and is bound to be the watch you wear the most. And that’s why, ideally, it should be your biggest investment. A bigger watch has the most impact, and this watch can be worn snug around the list or loose, like a bracelet. The ideal everyday watch should strike the perfect balance between classic and fashion-y (yes, that’s a word!). (EBAY has a great description of watch sizes right here.) Below, my 3 picks, for every budget.

The Sporty Watch

I don’t believe in sporty when it comes to lifestyle or to shoes, but when it comes to watches, it can be cute, casual and toddler-proof. Sporty watches tend to be chunkier, of course, and made of a material designed to withstand the elements. Even if, like me, you would never describe yourself as sporty, this kind of watch is a great (and inexpensive) way to add color to your collection.
