So what are you going to wear with a wardrobe of t-shirts and tank tops? Pants, of course, and no color is more flattering, functional or chic than black. While white can be impractical and khaki can, if not worn properly, be boring, black is faultless. The right pair of black pants depends on your lifestyle, but in general, I recommend two pairs for every woman:
1. A pair of black ponte knit pants for casual wear. These can be skinnies, if you choose, or in the shape that is most flattering to your body type. (See below!)
2. A pair of black dress pants in a seasonless crepe fabric, in a fabric that is flattering to your body type.
So here, my recommendations for casual and dress pants, for each body type. Don’t know your body type? Click here to read more about them, or contact me for a virtual style dial consultation. I chose one splurge and one steal for each of the Style Dial numbers, but there are many more if you follow me on Pinterest. Here, by body type, are another of my capsule wardrobe essentials: Black Pants.
Style Dial #1 Pants (hourglass, proportional body type): Bootcut
Look for a bootcut pant that goes in at the knee and then flares out slightly (or more) from there, or a skinny style if that is what you prefer.

The best black pants for a Style Dial #1, at top, casual ponte pants from Michael Kors, Theory Emery dress pants, J. Crew ponte Pixie pants, and Michael Kors dress pants.
Style Dial #2 Black Pants (most of shape in hips, thighs, with narrow shoulders): Straight Leg
Style Dial #3 Pants (straight body type): Graduated flare
If your body lacks definition in the waist, and your hips and shoulders are proportional, then look for a graduated flare (best) or a bootcut. A skinny will also work on all body types, provided the other details are flattering.
