Interview with Davida, part 2
Another topic of discussion during my recent live radio interview with Davida Sidrane Hogan, lifestyle director of Woman's day, was current hair and makeup trends that are suited for very busy women. Here were the ideas I had for spring trends that any mom can fit into her schedule:
1. Pretty spring makeup in 5 minutes: When Davida asked me what I would do, makeup wise, in only 15 minutes, we both laughed, because as busy moms, we rarely get 15 minutes to do our makeup, and when I do get that kind of time these days, I rarely know how to fill it. Now I'm the fastest makeup-applier ever. So, instead, I offered suggestions for the perfect, 5-minute face for spring. Start with tinted moisturizer, because the spring face is dewy. Skip powder unless your skin is very oily, and then use a mineral powder foundation instead of the moisturizer. In general, I think powder is aging, and the less you use, the better. If you want to go even more low key, mix some highlighting lotion into your daytime moisturizer (with SPF, of course!) and use that to give skin a glow and help conceal imperfections. Then, apply the season's musts: peach blush (which flatters absolutely everyone - I use Nars Orgasm), violet eyeliner (again, universally flattering), and lipstick. Nudes and berries are big for spring, and lipstick continues to dominate. Glosses are only used sparingly, to give a little shine after lipstick is applied. For practicality, I often blot my lipstick during the day to make it more of a stain. Finish with a little mascara and you're done!
2. The Perfect Pony: One of spring's key looks is the very time-friendly ponytail, and it doesn't have to be perfect. Hair accessories are a major trend for spring, so there are many fun ways to dress up the basic ponytail, from leather ponytail holders to silk scarves to jeweled accessories. A higher ponytail also acts a quick facelift, making you appear youthful and less tired. Just don't go too high and cheerlead-y.
3. CURLS!!! Woo-hoo. We can put away our flatirons because curls are, at long last, back. For those of us who, like me, wore curly hair out of nature and necessity, we can finally flaunt our ringlets. Those whose hair is semi-straight, semi-curly, an enviable situation,in my opinion, can add texture to their hair to achieve the season's hot tousled look by using products. The pitfall, as Davida pointed out, is that sometimes making hair look undone takes more time than just doing it. I recommend finding a good texturizer, like Kusco Murphy Beach Hair or John Frieda Beach Blonde. Comb first, apply a little texturizer to your hair and work it through with your fingers. That's it. Too much time and it will look too deliberate. And although this works great on second-day hair, it's not the same as bedhead. :)))
