Davida Interview Part 3: The Best Anti-Aging Advice
This blog covers part 3 of my interview last Friday with Davida Sidrane Hogan, Lifestyle Director for Woman's Day Magazine, on her live radio show Radio WD. The final main topic that we discussed was aging, and Davida asked me about the best anti-aging advice I'd ever heard. The simplistic answer, and still the most overlooked one, in my opinion, is to wear sunscreen. Sunscreen is still the single most effective way to prevent skin aging. Beyond that, here's my advice:
1. The fewer the products you use, the fewer preservatives and chemicals end up on your skin, so it pays to pare down from an anti-aging standpoint as well as from a time and budget standpoint. Don't you love it when something that you want to do, that's practical and convenient and cost-effective, is also good for you? This advice was given to me by one of my favorite famous dermatologists, Dr. Dennis Gross of MD Skincare. Look for multipurpose products, like a daytime moisturizer loaded with sunscreen and antioxidants.
2. Along that same note, use sunscreen and antioxidants in conjunction with each other for the most effective protection possible.
3. Use antioxidants in the morning, and a retinol or retinoid product at night. A great budget pick is Neutrogena Healthy Skin Night Cream.
4. Sleep on your back. Those creases that wind up on your face when you sleep on your side break down collagen and eventually lead to premature wrinkling. Prop pillows on either side of your body, if you need to, until you train yourself to sleep that way. Silk pillowcases also help, as do those anti-wrinkle pillows. Anything so that you are not pressing your skin into the pillow.
5. This isn't exactly anti-aging advice, but it's a great tip anyway: Don't waste your money on an expensive cleanser. Your dollars will literally go down the drain. The active ingredients in a cleanser, if it has any, don't stay on your skin long enough to do their thing. Buy a good, basic cleanser that removes makeup without drying your skin, like Cetaphil or Purpose.
Simple, I know, and not headline-making, but the best advice rarely is. It's just common sense. It's all about consistency.
